Over the course of the show, audiences saw eliminations, double-crosses, intense glares, and a memorable moment that cut through all tension.

Yet on the final evening, the final winner of the inaugural celebrity edition emerged triumphant.

Out of nineteen participants, just a handful were left standing: Traitors and faithfuls competing for the prize.

Soon, the competition tightened to only three contenders: the final players.

Ultimately, comedian Alan Carr emerged as the champion, in a surprising outcome that went viral and left him emotional.

"This has been destroying me, my apologies," he declared, revealing to the remaining faithfuls that he was actually a traitor. "I feel terrible about this."

"You did brilliantly," they consoled him. "It's all right."

Social media immediately exploded with the news. "Most awful traitor ever being the most effective player," commented one user.

"There could not have been a more iconic ending," wrote another, while someone else described it as "the TV moment of the year."

The organization he selected, Neuroblastoma UK, gets to keep all the prize money, with the total amount amounting to eighty-seven thousand five hundred pounds.

Spoiler alert! See how Celebrity Traitors comes to a thrilling ending

Alan Carr's transformation from comic relief to cold-hearted killer was one of the standout highlights of the season.

However, his victory still left the nation surprised, according to industry observers.

"The thought of him, of all people, pulling off a masterclass in deceit felt just as probable as him keeping a straight face through his comedy routines."

During follow-up conversations, the other contestants summed up the reasons nobody had ever really suspected him.

"Alan could have appeared to the morning meal in a green cloak and I wouldn't have believed he was a traitor. I was too busy laughing," one participant said.

"The majority didn't target him because how can you eliminate someone who is so charming?" asked a different contestant.

The winner stated he had "absolutely loved" his time on the show.

"I'd like to do it again... I doubt it would work a second time!"

The final installment was extended to over an hour on the network. It had a different start than typical episodes, as every celebrity were aware who'd make it at the breakfast table.

There was particularly inspiring, and atypical for the show music, as we recapped some moments from each of the finalists' time in the castle.

True to form, Alan Carr provided unforgettable quotes.

"To be honest, I began this game a bit of a nervous wreck. I've thrown close allies to save myself, I've eliminated beloved figures in plain sight. I'm clearly a better liar and player than I thought."

At the same time, a different player commented that being in the final was "significantly more pressure than competing with a national team", while someone else said he was "totally surprised" to have made it so far.

Early on of the finale, several players seemed to be attempting to become the new style icon of the competition, replacing an earlier departed fashionable contestant.

Carr emerged at the morning meal resembling a 1950s US chat show host in a checked maroon suit, before changing into an embellished light-colored outfit.

However, he got out-jacketted by a fellow player's burgundy formal wear. Impressive style.

Following this was the challenge, with the remaining contestants boarding a train named - of course - The Deceivers' Railway.

The challenge involved destroying images of former contestants. Spare a thought for one participant who managed to get hit on the head THREE times by the lid of a substantial container.

Soon after, it was time for the elimination discussion.

The deceivers did a pinky promise in advance, pledging to support each other. "We've come a long way, I'm not going to throw him under a bus," said one, while the other simply laughed.

However, one adhered to their agreement. But, having slipped under the radar for the majority of the competition, their partner still got the most votes.

The last deceiver looked like he was in significant distress to be the final deceiver remaining. "Being alone, I'm frightened," he said. "I'm unpredictable, without direction."

Social media and onlookers were similarly upset.

"I hoped against that player to be banished. An endearing deceiver," commented a commentator.

"You will forever be remembered in the show's legacy," wrote a different viewer.

But there was little opportunity to dwell on this departure. Soon, the game reached the final stage - this being the moment everyone anticipated.

The last players stood over the fire pit. And the alliance collapsed, precisely when it mattered the most, in a truly WTF moment.

One contestant was painfully banished - after a shock vote from their ally, who turned against them.

"It hurts to be stabbed in the back last minute in that manner," remarked the eliminated player. Later, it was revealed that when they message, the eliminated contestant calls their former ally as a traitor.

Finally, only three contestants remained in the game: the last participants.

One player, appearing quite pleased, voted to end the game. The same decision was made by another, and it all came down to the third, who did the same - which meant that the deceiver was the winner.

For observers, the scene where the other players comforted the champion was "compelling television". "I predict it could be a contender for outstanding scene at television honors," they commented.

Fortunately, the champion quickly regained composure from his bout of tears, and was able to enjoy the moment.

"What a rollercoaster. I was awful at lying, my expressions gave me away and now I stand the champion," the winner said.

And he even joked about that infamous murder - his best friend during the initial stages - by reaching over the presenter in the final scene and making contact.

"There's something on your face," he said, with his characteristic laugh.

The last few weeks of famous people scheming, scheming and the occasional surprising incidents may seem like a bizarre fantasy. But it really did all happen. And we will miss it.
