At least 64 Fatally Wounded in Rio de Janeiro's Most Extensive Law Enforcement Operation on Organized Crime
At least 64 civilians lost their lives in a security raid cracking down on the Red Command gang in Rio de Janeiro's north zone - the most extensive and fatal action in the region's records.
Four law enforcement personnel were among those killed during Operation Containment in the communities of Alemão and Penha, government representatives reported. In excess of 80 suspects were detained.
Intense confrontations broke out when around 2,500 law enforcement officers moved in on Tuesday morning. The Red Command responded with armed resistance, burning barricades and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, police representatives confirmed.
The UN Human Rights Office said it was "appalled" by the security action, demanding "swift and comprehensive examinations".
Raid Aftermath
The informal settlements adjacent to the aerial transportation hub is seen as the headquarters of among the nation's strongest criminal organizations.
State officials confirmed no less than 50 of the deceased were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".
Many residents were hurt, including civilians caught in the crossfire.
Local Reaction
Community members have likened the hillside area - inhabited by approximately 300,000 residents - to a "combat area" since the mission commenced.
Access ways continue shut throughout the region.
Organized Crime Spread
The Red Command group have been expanding their control throughout the region, expanding narcotics distribution networks and power in the informal settlements.
Security forces reported over 200kg (441lb) of illegal substances were captured in the raid, together with multiple guns.

The combined action by civil and military police comes after a twelve-month inquiry.
Numerous alleged criminals are thought to be members of a faction from the Brazilian state who are currently hiding in the metropolitan area.
