An National Design and Historic Emblem

The new design showcases a Union Flag-inspired colour scheme to mirror the Union Flag and will be used on locomotives, at terminals, and across its online presence.

Significantly, the emblem is the well-known twin-arrow design presently used by National Rail and originally created in the 1960s for the former state operator.

A Implementation Plan

The rollout of the design, which was created internally, is expected to occur in phases.

Commuters are expected to begin noticing the newly-branded trains on the UK rail network from spring next year.

During December, the branding will be showcased at key stations, such as Glasgow Central.

The Path to Renationalisation

The Railways Bill, which will allow the establishment of GBR, is currently making its way through the legislative process.

The government has stated it is bringing back into public ownership the railways so the network is "run by the passengers, delivering for the people, not for profit."

Great British Railways will consolidate the running of passenger trains and tracks and signals under one umbrella body.

The department has said it will unify seventeen various entities and "eliminate the problematic bureaucracy and poor accountability that hinders the railways."

Digital Services and Current Ownership

The launch of GBR will also feature a new mobile application, which will enable passengers to check timetables and reserve journeys absent booking fees.

Accessibility users will also be have the option to use the app to book assistance.

A number of franchises had already been taken into public control under the outgoing administration, including TPE.

There are currently seven operating companies already in state ownership, representing about a one-third of passenger trips.

In the last twelve months, South Western Railway have been nationalised, with additional operators likely to follow in the coming years.

Ministerial and Sector Reaction

"The new design is not simply a new logo," commented the Transport Secretary. It symbolises "a fresh start, leaving behind the frustrations of the past and concentrated completely on delivering a reliable passenger-focused service."

Industry representatives have acknowledged the government's commitment to improving services.

"The industry will continue to collaborate with relevant bodies to facilitate a smooth handover to GBR," a representative said.
