The Tragic Transformation Just One Year Has Made in the United States

Twelve months back, the landscape was completely different. Ahead of the US presidential election, considerate Americans could admit the nation's serious imperfections – its unfairness and inequality – but they could still see it as America. A democracy. A place where the rule of law held significance. A country guided by a dignified and decent official, notwithstanding his advanced age and increasing frailty.

Currently, this autumn, many of us scarcely know the nation we inhabit. Individuals believed to be illegal immigrants are detained and pushed into vans, occasionally blocked from fair treatment. The left side of the presidential residence – is being torn down for an obscene event space. Donald Trump is targeting his political rivals or alleged foes and insisting legal authorities surrender a huge total of citizen dollars. Uniformed troops are deployed into American cities under fabricated reasons. The defense headquarters, rebranded the War Department, has effectively liberated itself of day-to-day journalistic scrutiny as it spends potentially totaling close to a trillion USD of taxpayer money. Universities, law firms, media outlets are submitting from leader's menaces, and wealthy elites are treated like nobility.

“The US, only a few months ahead of its 250-year mark as the world’s leading democracy, has crossed the edge toward dictatorship and fascism,” an American historian, wrote in August. “Finally, swifter than I imagined possible, it occurred here.”

Every morning starts to new horrors. It is hard to comprehend – and painful to realize – how severely declined we are, and the rapid pace with which it unfolded.

Nevertheless, we understand that Trump was duly elected. Following his profoundly alarming previous administration and even after the alerts linked to the knowledge of Project 2025 – despite the leader directly stated openly he planned to act as an autocrat just on day one – a majority of citizens chose him over Kamala Harris.

While alarming as the present situation are, it's more daunting to realize that we’re only nine months into this presidential term. Where will another 36 months of this deterioration leave us? And suppose that period transforms into something even longer, as there is no one to limit this ruler from deciding that another term is essential, perhaps for security concerns?

Certainly, not everything is hopeless. There are legislative votes the coming year that may bring a different governmental control, should Democrats recapture either chamber of Congress. There are government representatives who are trying to impose some accountability, like representatives who are launching an investigation concerning the try to fund seizure from the justice department.

And a leadership election three years from now could begin the path to healing precisely as the previous vote put us on this disappointing trajectory.

There are millions of Americans marching in the streets of their cities, like they performed last weekend during anti-authority protests.

A former official, commented this week that “the dormant powerhouse of the US is stirring”, exactly as before post-McCarthyism during the fifties or amid the sixties activism or throughout the seventies crisis.

In those instances, the listing ship finally returned to balance.

He claims he knows the signals of that resurgence and notices it unfolding now. As support, he cites the recent massive protests, the broad, cross-party resistance against a television host's removal and the largely united refusal by journalists to agree to military mandates they report only authorized information.

“The slumbering entity always remains asleep till certain corruption turns extremely harmful, a particular deed so disrespectful of societal benefit, certain violence so noisy, that he is forced other than to stir.”

It's a hopeful perspective, and I respect the author's seasoned opinion. Possibly he may prove to be right.

At the same time, the big questions remain: can America return to normalcy? Is it possible to restore its standing globally and its adherence to constitutional order?

Or do we need to admit that the national endeavor functioned for a period, and then – swiftly, totally – ended?

My pessimistic brain indicates that the latter is true; that all may indeed be lost. My optimistic spirit, however, tells me that we need to strive, through all methods we can.

Personally, as an observer of the press, that means encouraging reporters to live up, more thoroughly, to their duty of holding power to account. For some people, it could mean participating in congressional campaigns, or coordinating protests, or discovering methods to protect voting rights.

Not even one year prior, we were in a very different place. A year from now? Or three years from now? The fact is, we don’t know. Our sole course is to attempt to persevere.
